Coastal Steward Stories 
The California Coastal Commission is inviting the public to submit personal stories of coastal stewardship for posting on their website, in conjunction with their Coastal Stewardship Pledge. If you have taken part in something to care for our coast and ocean, please share your story and/or pictures in order to inspire others to take action in their daily lives.
Submit your coastal stewardship story by Aug. 1 for the chance to win a "Coast-Lover's Prize Package".

School Garden in a Box
Interested in starting a garden, but don't have the space? An innovative alternative to traditional school gardens has surfaced!
EarthBox is a PreK-12th Grade Curriculum Support and youth Garden Guide correlated to teach the science behind plants, water, soil, light and nutrition, both in the garden and classroom. They are a practical tool for teachers new to gardening, or for those who have limited outdoor space for traditional garden sites. The EarthBox Garden Packages are easily set up, maintained and sustained. The National Gardening Association presents the Youth Garden Grants Program
In 2008, 150 programs will receive gift cards to The Home Depot for the purchase of gardening materials and supplies particular to the needs of their program, and an activity package from NGA. NOAA Ocean Exploration Cayman Islands Twilight Zone mission website launched
We are proud to announce the first expedition of NOAA Ocean
Exploration’s 2007 field season, “Cayman Islands Twilight Zone,” is now
available on NOAA’s Ocean Explorer website.
From May 20-June 10, a scientific team will study coral reefs of the
“twilight zone” in the Caribbean Sea between Jamaica and Cuba.

- Maintain quality and standards of all education programs
- Plan and manage docent training programs
- Oversee the development and maintenance of our extensive educational materials collection

Job Opening: Executive Director, Collective Roots
Organization Description
Collective Roots (CR) is a non-profit organization that teaches students about environmental science and nutrition through K-5 garden-based lessons, an after-school garden club, a middle school elective, and parent and community workdays. CR's mission is to develop young urban leaders who know where their food comes from and how their actions impact human and environmental health.
Qualifications
Education: Any combination of training, education, and work experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in management, education, business administration, community organization, social sciences, or a related field.
Experience: At least five years successful work experience preferably in a management, administrative or leadership capacity. Demonstrated track record of successful fundraising and funder relations is a must. Previous community development, not-for-profit program director, or teaching experience is a plus. Knowledge of food systems and nutrition issues, environmental education, and/or sustainable gardening also desirable.
Skills: Strong leader who motivates others to participate. Strategic thinker who envisions the "big picture" and can move the organization into the future. Entrepreneurial and energetic. Strong communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills including negotiating, coaching, consulting, and influencing others. Ability to form productive relationships with diverse groups of students and families. Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.
Compensation
Salary is commensurate with experience. The position is full-time; some work on weekends is required. Medical benefits are included.

EPA/USDA (A Joint Research Solicitation): Ecological Impacts from the Interactions of Climate Change, Land Use Change and Invasive Species: This is a collaboration between the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Science to Achieve Results (STAR) Program and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Research Initiative (NRI) Competitive Grants Program. The purpose of this joint solicitation is to quantitatively investigate how climate change, climate variability, and land use changes. Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation, International Paper and National Geographic Explorer have partnered to create an outdoor classroom grant program to provide schools with engaging, hands-on science experiences outside the traditional classroom- including water quality testing. All K-12 public schools in the United States are welcome to apply. This school year, the program will award grants up to $2,000 to a 100 schools. Proposition 84 Funding:
Urban Streams Restoration Program: The Department of Water Resources
has just announced the Urban Streams Restoration Program for 2007
using Prop 84 funds. With voter approval of Proposition 84, the Urban
Streams Restoration Program will have available grant funding.
Proposition 84 includes $18 million for the Urban Streams Restoration
Program. DWR anticipates holding the first of two application cycles
in mid 2007 (deadline currently unknown).
