Conservation Corner With summer just around the corner, the Santa Clara Valley Water District encourages you to ramp up your efforts to conserve water. The Water-Wise House Call Program is the perfect start to conservation in your home. One way to save money, water and energy in your home is with a free Water-Wise House Call. Trained technicians will come to your home, assess your water usage, provide customized water efficiency tips and give you an annual irrigation schedule specific to your landscape’s watering needs. Considering that Valley Water’s recently completed Residential Baseline Study shows that leaks in single family homes waste over 814 million gallons a year, becoming as water efficient as possible may lead to some significant savings for you. During a Water-Wise House Call, the technician: checks your toilet for leaks and replaces toilet flapper valves if needed, measures your showerhead flow rates and installs free showerheads if needed, measures faucet flow rates and provides aerators for kitchens and bathrooms. The survey’s focus then shifts to outdoor water use, (over half of the water used in an average home goes to their landscape), and the technician then evaluates the efficiency of your irrigation system, provides you with a personalized irrigation schedule, identifies overspray, broken or mismatched sprinkler heads, high water pressure and other problems, and provides water conservation program materials and water-wise landscaping tips from the pros. All residents of Santa Clara County are eligible. Residents of single-family homes, condos, townhouses, apartments, and mobile homes are invited to participate. Just call (800) 548-1882 to set up an appointment. San Jose Water Company customers should call (408) 279-7900 to schedule an appointment.
