SAN JOSE--Rosemary Kamei, a leader in dealing with critical water resource policy issues, was today elected chairperson of the Santa Clara Valley Water District board of directors for the 2008 calendar year.

Kamei said as the chair she will “focus on providing the leadership needed to accomplish water district objectives and address our priorities and upcoming issues, including recycled water, flood protection projects and the environmental work we do.”

Kamei said as the new chair she would like to see a lot more streamlining and a few changes in the district’s budget process.

Kamei - who lives in Morgan Hill -- was first appointed to the board in October 1993 to represent residents in Gilroy, San Martín, Morgan Hill, southern San José and Los Gatos following the resignation of a sitting director. She served as the chairperson in 1995 and in 2002.

As a member of the board, Kamei represents the water district on the Guadalupe-Coyote Resource Conservation District, the Pajaro River Watershed Committee, Bay Area Water Agency Forum, Santa Clara Valley Conservation Plan Elected Officials Liaison Group, South County Regional Wastewater Authority, Perchlorate Community Advisory Group, Environmental Advisory Committee, and the Uvas/Llagas Flood Control and Watershed Advisory Committee.

The Santa Clara Valley Water District manages wholesale drinking water resources and provides stewardship for the county's watersheds, including 10 reservoirs, hundreds of miles of streams and groundwater basins. The water district also provides flood protection throughout Santa Clara County
