Seven Silicon Valley firms issue "corporate challenge" to clean up Santa Clara County creeks
On Earth Day, April 22, seven firms held a “First Challengers” cleanup. This inaugural creek cleanup publicly challenged other Silicon Valley companies to adopt a creek section between Earth Day and National River Cleanup Day held on May 18.
Companies participating in the 11 a.m-2 p.m. corporate challenge were Adobe Systems, Agilent Technologies, Cinnabar Hills Golf Course, Flextronics Semiconductor, Nortel Networks, San Jose Country Club and Therma Corp.
The seven companies will continue to periodically clean their adopted creeks throughout the year. Five of the firms — Adobe Systems, Agilent Technologies, Flextronics Semiconductor, Therma Corporation and Nortel Networks — are members of Santa Clara Valley Water District's Adopt-A-Creek program.
Businesses participate to demonstrate their commitment to the community and to help build relationships among employees outside of the office.
What is the Corporate Challenge?
The Corporate Challenge is a free program that encourages Santa Clara County companies to get involved with their local communities by adopting and cleaning a stretch of creek in Santa Clara County through the Santa Clara Valley Water District’s Adopt-A-Creek program.
Companies are responsible for holding a minimum of two creek cleanups a year in which their employees participate on a volunteer basis.
To join the program, a company simply:
- chooses a section of creek to help clean
- signs up for the program with the water district
- specifies the days it will perform its cleanup
- organizes a volunteer party of employees and their friends to participate in the cleanup
The water district provides gloves, trash bags and other tools to perform the cleanup and will also pick up all collected trash and
debris on-site.
