Mobile lab helps farmers improve irrigation efficiency

What can the mobile lab do for you?
Mobile lab irrigation specialists will measure the distribution uniformity of your irrigation system during one of your regularly scheduled irrigations. Distribution uniformity is a measure of evenness with which your irrigation system distributes water
to your plants and is crucial to maintaining high yields and
water-use efficiency.

The lab staff will test pump, filter and emitter or sprinkler performance, and measure pressures and flow rates throughout the field to determine how uniformly water is being applied to your crop.

Why should I use the mobile lab?
A lab evaluation will give you solid information on the performance of your pump and irrigation system. The lab can
also evaluate a new system to see if you are getting what you paid for. Lastly, a mobile lab evaluation of your irrigation system will allow you to claim a discount of $3.75 per acre-foot off your groundwater withdrawal fees.

Who is eligible for mobile lab services?
Anyone in Santa Clara County who owns or manages commercial agricultural cropland or a commercial nursery.

How long does an evaluation take?
Timing can vary depending on the size of the property and the complexity of the irrigation system. For drip, micro and sprinkler systems evaluation can take between two and eight hours to complete. Furrow irrigation tests take somewhat longer.

At the end of the test, the lab technician will give you preliminary information. Final results are usually complete in seven to 10 days. The lab technician will call you and schedule an appointment to go over the results. Results will be mailed to you for your review before the meeting.

To set up an appointment, or for more information, contact Bob Siegfried at (408) 265-2607, ext. 2969, or submit an online request form.
