Rinconada Water Treatment Plant
Water Treatment Improvement Project

Background

The Water Treatment Improvement Project (WTIP) was initiated to improve the quality of drinking water produced by the Santa Clara Valley Water District and enable the district to meet or exceed new, more stringent, water quality regulations. The project is being implemented in two stages.

Stage 1
Stage 1 was completed in 2001 and included the addition of new chemical facilities, modifications to existing chemical facilities, and the construction of a new warehouse.

Stage 2

NOTE: Stage 2 improvements are on-hold, currently undergoing further study.

Stage 2 of the project will continue providing improvements through water treatment process modifications and additions. These steps will improve the quality of treated water provided to customers and enable the district to meet federal Environmental Protection Agency regulations.

Stage 2 improvements at Rinconada will include converting the primary drinking water disinfection process from chlorine to ozone and improving the quality of the water recycled through the plant. In addition, other improvements will strengthen existing plant structures and clarifier equipment to be more resilient during an earthquake and will minimize disruptions to water services if such an event occurs.

The Stage 2 improvements at Rinconada will also include the addition of a fifth flocculation/sedimentation clarifier basin to increase the production capacity from 80 million gallons per day (mgd) to 100 mgd. Construction work for Stage 2 is scheduled to begin in early 2009 and should take about four years to complete.
